2014 MATHCOUNTS Report
Participation in the Oregon MATHCOUNTS program included a total of 866 middle-school students. This included 64 school teams and 236 individuals for a total of 492 participants registered in the Competition program. There were 35 Club Programs with an average of 18 participants in each club for a total of 630 participants. 18 Schools hosted both a Club and a Competition team.
During the month of February, competition was held in the nine regions within the state. From the regional competition, 12 teams advanced to the state competition which was held at Oregon State University on March 8, 2014.In March, the winners from the 9 regional competitions advanced to the state competition, which was again held at Oregon State University. A total of 63 students competed including 12 school teams and 15 individuals.
Stoller Middle School of Beaverton coached by Manny Norse took the top team award. The next four teams were: Meadow Park Middle School (second) coached by Mark McClure; Access Academy (third) coached by Amy Mackinnon; Cheldelin Middle School (fourth) coached by Anne Ulstad; and Catlin Gable School (fifth) coached by Lauren Shareshian.
The top 4 students at the state competition, who also formed the Oregon state team, were: Anders Olsen (first) from ACCESS Academy, Stuti Garg (second) from Meadow Park Middle School, Josh He (third) from Stoller Middle School and Matt Leungpathomaram (fourth) of Caitlin-Gable School. Manny Norse, a long-time MATHCOUNTS Coach from Stoller Middle School was the team Coach for the National Competition.
The Pacific Northwest intramural competition was held April 12th in Abbotsford British Columbia. This intramural competition is unique in the nation and it helps the Oregon team by providing a venue for an "on-the-road" competition before the National competition. Oregon's team placed Second behind the Washington State Team.
The National MATHCOUNTS Competition was held May 8-11 at Disney World in Orlando Florida. 56 teams with 224 students competed from all 50 states plus U.S. territories and the District of Columbia. Oregon's team placed 21st Overall with our top individuals placing 54nd and 71st.
